Terbinafine is an antifungal drug (a drug that kills fungi). It’s used to treat infections that are caused by fungi, including those that affect fingernails and toenails. It doesn’t change the way that damaged nails look. But, by stopping the fungus, it allows new nails to grow normally. The brand name for terbinafine pills is Lamisil.
You’ll need to take terbinafine pills every day for at least three months.
Studies show that terbinafine is safe to take for most people. This includes people who have diabetes or HIV, and people who’ve had a transplant. If you take terbinafine pills every day for 12 weeks, there’s a 6 in 10 chance you’ll get rid of your fungal nail infection. If you take the drug for 24 weeks, you’re even more likely to get rid of your fungal nail infection. Nearly 9 in 10 people who take terbinafine for 24 weeks got rid of their fungal nail infection.Terbinafine pills appear to work better than itraconazole pills and griseofulvin pills.
All antifungal pills can cause diarrhea, a rash or breathing problems. But not many people get these problems. They are usually mild and go away when you stop taking the pills.
Terbinafine can also cause taste, smell or vision problems. These effects are often mild and not many people get them. They should go away when you stop taking the pills.
You may be slightly more likely to get side effects if you’re older (over 60). One study found that among 30 people over 60 years old, 18 had side effects from the drug. These side effects were classed as mild or moderate. And no one in the study stopped their treatment because of these reactions.
Sometimes people get more serious side effects. These are rare but it is important to know about them. Terbinafine can cause liver problems and heart problems. 2 weeks ago i, while doing my own manicure, i discovered that my thumb nail was partly separating from the nail bed. I immediatelly assumed that this was a nail fungus ( maybe i got it from the salon ). After searching the net what could be done, i also consulted my pharmacist. He suggested to soak my thumb in a mixture of Hydrogen Peroxide (3%) and vinegar 50/50, which i did for 5 days. In addition he gave me Lamisil spray. It worked. After this treatment the nail looked nearly normal again but i applied Lamisil cream and a band aid whenever i left the house (also, because i didn’t wear nail polish on this finger). I realized, that the cream even works better and the nail itself starts attaching to the nail bed again. I will continue for a few more weeks to make sure, the fungus is killed completely.

I took the Lamisil pills for 12 weeks, I notice that the new nail growth coming in, but now after months, my left to nail has become infected again. Any suggestons???

I have been on Lamisil for 2 months and the results are extremely noticeable!! I have not had any bad side effects. We’ll see what happens after I stop taking them.

I am experiencing this fungus on both my fingernails and toes. I just got a prescription today to start taking the medication. I am definitely going to keep you guys posted of my progress. This fungus is not only annoying but it is also embarrassing. I was also told to mix water and vinegar in a spray bottle and spray my toes and fingers after taking a shower or bath. In addition I have been using a topical solution called zeta clear which I have seen some slight results but not a lot. I am anxious to start my medication and hopeful that I will have clear nails by the summer!!!

I am desperately wanting the terbinafine to work as I have been suffering for a long time using different treatments without good results. My hands and feet are sooo embarrasing to me. I am praying it works to clear all of my nail beds. I will keep posted. Started treatment 2/28/12

I just started lamisil for toe nail fungus… This is my first day, so I don’t really have much to say yet, but I’ll keep you all posted. I have really bad fungi on 4 toe nails on my left foot. The skin on that foot cracks often and is a bit reddened most of the time on the tops of the toes. ( the cracking is on the bottom) I am on 250 mg lamisil once daily.
